Sophia’s Pre-K class has been studying babies. They have been “interviewing” younger siblings and learning all about where babies come from and what goes in to caring for a baby. Her teacher approached Joe and I the other day and asked if we would be willing to bring Ira in to be “interviewed”. Although he’s no longer a baby (hardly a toddler, for that matter) the teacher thought it might be helpful to learn that some babies have different experiences and require special care.
So I took Ira in to class today for his Q & A session. The kids were all very cute and thoughtful in their questions. Here are a few examples: “Can Ira walk?” (he must have been snoozing when Ira entered) “Can he talk?”(well yes, although I’ll probably have to translate) “Does he eat?” (I wish!) “How did he get his name?” (this one was my favorite)
Sophia made sure everyone knew that Ira was now sleeping on the bottom bunk of her bed and the room was no longer just her room but “Sophia’s AND Ira’s room.”
And yes, I cut all of my hair off.

How did Ira get his name? I hope he didn’t get it from the Johnny Cash song about drunken Ira Hayes.

I love this teacher for thinking to include Ira. It really is so important for little ones to understand differences and get all of their questions and curiosities out. Usually the adults around will shush them for being rude. Great haircut! You can pull off long or short and look marvelous either way!
